dredd sequel karl urban Karl Urban Says that Dredd Sequel is Not Off the Agenda

Dredd (3D) is an adaptation of the Judge Dredd comic book series – and reboot of the movie franchise started by the Sylvester Stallone vehicle released in 1995 – that, unfortunately, bombed at the box office despite receiving generally rock-solid reviews (like ours). The bloody action genre flick has found a larger audience on the home video circuit, but producer Adi Shankar has voiced his doubts that it will be enough to pave the way for a full-length sequel to happen; though, a hard-boiled short film spinoff (a la the Punisher short “Dirty Laundry”) is not out of the question.

Karl Urban has been taking press questions about a theatrically-released Dredd followup, during the promotions ...

Karl Urban as Judge Dredd Karl Urban On Dredd Sequel: Its Up To The Fans

2012′s Dredd was an attempt to reboot the cult-favorite character who originated in the British science fiction anthology 2000 A.D. In 1995, Sylvester Stallone starred as the helmeted dispenser of justice in a dystopian, seemingly post-apocalyptic future, who acted as judge, jury and executioner on the spot. While that movie remains a camp-tastic guilty pleasure, the Karl Urban-starring remake adopted the far darker, hyper-violent tone of the comics.

The film failed to catch on with the general movie-going public despite proving to be quite an excellent comic-book action flick. It’s total worldwide box office gross was about $32 million, on a $50 million budget. It’s surprising success on DVD and Blu-Ray (selling up to 650,000 copies, “making it the best-selling ...

Dredd Sequel Comic Underbelly Dredd 2 Comic Book Sequel Coming to the US Is the Film Dead?

Despite uninspiring box office numbers, the 2012 Judge Dredd franchise reboot from Pete Travis received solid praise from critics and moviegoers alike – washing away the bitter taste of Danny Cannon’s 1995 adaptation starring Sylvester Stallone. While comparisons to Gareth Evans’ The Raid: Redemption remain an unavoidable talking point for naysayers, even though both films were in production at the same time, Travis and his Dredd star, Karl Urban, ultimately presented an entertaining (and downright brutal) movie experience (read our Dredd 3D review) – one that scored decent returns on retail shelves and continues to spread positive word-of-mouth. The post-release momentum, along with a leading-man that is ...

Judge Dredd 2 Sequel Update Dredd 2 Update: Karl Urban Says Conversations Are Happening

As fans of comic book properties bristle at the notion of any change, updating, reimagining, or reinterpretation without studios seeming to hear, the makers of Dredd did things differently. In short, they took the “Judge Dredd” comic book and adapted it as faithfully as any fan could hope, with over the top violence, a colossal body count, and an unchanging hero without a face.

The end result was considered by many to be one of the more cohesive comic book films of the past ten years (read our review), and thanks to a tragically mismanaged marketing campaign, a financial flop. It seemed that despite the stage being set for a story-driven franchise, the chance of a ...

Best Movie TV Weapons We Want Science to Create 10 Movie & TV Weapons We Want Science To Create

Since the first adventure films featured iconic cowboys charging into battle wielding six-shooters, medieval knights drawing swords on the battlefield, and heroes of the future with laser blasters at their side, cinema’s love affair with firearms (and the men and women who wield them) has been set in stone. But real weapons could only scratch the itch for so long; eventually, movie audiences began to crave not the guns and heroes of the past, but those of the future.

Over the past century, science fiction and fantasy have done their best to show off technology and weapons just beyond the grasp of modern minds, hinting at the kinds of discoveries that may or may ...

Judge Dredd comic book movie reboot Dredd wasn’t a hit the box office, with a worldwide gross that fell below its $50 million budget, but then its strong DVD and Blu-ray sales renewed fans’ hopes that a sequel to the film could happen.

Over the year or so since then, star Karl Urban has continue to provide update after update, but with little actual progress to report. If nothing else, though, it’s been comforting for the Judge’s fanbase to hear that Dredd 2 is still being discussed by studio folk, regardless of how much closer (or not) it is to actually being made.

As you can see in the above video, Urban has once again provide some words of encouragement for Dredd fans to keep the faith alive. He not only offers his assurance that he and select ...

Judge Dredd 2 Sequel Update Producer: Dredd 2 Conversations Happening But No Script

Dredd (2012) might not have been a huge box office hit, but its popularity among those who did watch it has provided it with something of a cult status.

And though fans of the film are continuing to clamor for a Dredd 2, the film is still a long ways off according to producer Adi Shankar. In a recent interview, Shankar confirmed Karl Urban’s recent assessment that “conversations are happening” around the film, but was quick to point out that those conversations don’t mean a sequel is forthcoming.

Speaking with Dweebcast, the producer said there was still no script for the project and that because the first film was produced independently with a different distributor for every ...

Dredd vs. The Dark Judges Dredd Producer to Release Dark Judges Miniseries Online

Producer Adi Shankar has gained some notoriety in the last few years due to his investment in some noted genre films (The Grey, Lone SurvivorBroken City) – as well as his passion-project anti-hero short films, which include the Punisher short “Dirty Laundry” (featuring Thomas Jane back in the role), and the Venom short “Truth In Journalism” (featuring True Blood star Ryan Kwanten).

Of course, Shankar is probably best known as one of the forces that made the 2012 Dredd reboot happen - which ergo makes him a focal point for any questions about the possibility of Dredd 2, and/or any other plans for the franchise’s future.

Well, as NYCC 2014 is about to kick off in New York, The Wrap reports ...

A few weeks back during New York Comic-Con, we hosted a panel for producer Adi Shankar, the man behind such films as The Grey, Machine Gun Preacher, Lone Surivor and of course, Dredd. During that panel, Shankar premiered a new entry from another venture he’s well-known for – the “Bootleg Universe” – which has brought us such unofficial fan-films as Punisher “Dirty Laundry” and Venom “Truth In Journalism.”

During our NYCC panel with Shankar, we got a first look at footage from Superfiend, the new Dredd miniseries – an animated miniseries at that – which looks at the origins of comic book fan-favorite characters The Dark Judges – including Judge Death, who is featured in today’s poster and first-look images ...

When the Dredd reboot released in 2012 the film didn’t immediately score a sequel thanks to its low domestic box office. The home video released raised its profile and quickly the film earned a strong cult following, but any chance at a sequel is still pretty slim. But true fans never say die, and as they continue to clamor for more Dredd, the rumors and speculation of a Dredd 2 never cease.

Right there with those enthusiastic fans is the equally enthused Adi Shankar, producer of The Grey, Lone Survivor, and of course, Dredd. And though Shankar doesn’t see a Dredd sequel as a real possibility, he’s continued his involvement with the property in the form of a new animated miniseriesJudge Dredd: Superfiend. You can watch its first trailer for the miniseries, above.

It was a dark day for fans of the Judge Dredd character and universe when Sly Stallone’s misguided 1995 action flick of the same name arrived in theaters. Stallone and director Danny Cannon’s interpretation of the character was a massive failure on both a critical and commercial level, receiving terrible reviews, and coming up short of profitability at the box office.

Then, in 2012, director Pete Travis, writer Alex Garland, and star Karl Urban teamed up to deliver fans the exact movie they had wanted the first time around. Simply titled Dredd, this new adaptation stuck much, much closer to the original character and story from the comics, and was just as dark, harsh, and uncompromisingly brutal as the source material called for. Unfortunately, Dredd was a bomb in North American theaters, effectively crushing any hopes fans had ...

Judge Dredd Superfiend Miniseries Interview Interview: The Junquero Brothers Talk Judge Dredd: Superfiend

Earlier this month at New York Comic-Con, producer Adi Shankar partnered with Screen Rant to give fans a special sneak peek into his new web series Judge Dredd: Superfiend. Now, the fan-friendly producer has released the full series online for Dredd fans to devour in one sitting.

The series, which is part of Shankar’s “bootleg” universe of unauthorized fan films, focuses on the famed Dark Judges of 2000AD comics, most notably Judge Death. For those unfamiliar with the characters, the Dark Judges are undead former judges who believe the very act of living is a crime (and they take their jobs very seriously).

To bring these larger-than-life (or is it death?) characters to life, Shankar turned to animators Luis and Enol Junquera. ...

Power Rangers Movie Reboot Green Ranger 3 Reasons Why Studios & Creators Should Love Bootleg Universe Short Films

Despite a long list of high profile films ranging from cult-hits (Dredd) to award season darlings (Lone Survivor), producer Adi Shankar is best known for high-profile unauthorized short film interpretations of popular movie and TV franchises. Dubbed the “Bootleg Universe,” Shankar has delivered alternate, not to mention very R-Rated, takes on everything from Venom to an animated Dredd spinoff series titledJudge Dredd: Superfiend. However, recently, the producer/filmmaker has kicked his short film releases into overdrive – releasing two separate Bootleg Universe entries in the span of a single week: Power/Rangers (a NSFW take on the beloved kids TV show) and James Bond: In Service of Nothing (a 007 parody adventure starring an animated Sean Connery).

If you’re a fan of Pete Travis’ 2012 film Dredd, then you’ve likely had your fill of promises, whispers, and murmurs about a sequel over the last year and change; the only new Dredd-centric media that’s actually happened so far is the Superfiends miniseries. So hope, it seems, is for the moment lost or at least in need of judicious stoking. But a potential return to the mean streets of Mega-City One isn’t totally out of the question just yet; it could happen, but only if the rules of movie funding physics play in Dredd 2‘s favor.

Need a brushing up on the science of how independent films are financed and produced? Good news – executive producer Adi Shankar has your back. Using his Youtube channel as his podium, Shankar has released a six minute clip in which he discusses the ins and outs of securing backing in the world of independent filmmaking, all in service to explaining ...

Dredd 2 Not Happening Dredd Screenwriter Alex Garland Doesnt Think a Sequel Will Happen

While Dredd was not a box office success – it made $35 million worldwide against a $50 million production budget – its popularity has only grown since its release. It’s fair to say that the film has something of a cult fanbase at this point, a fanbase that would very much like to see a sequel with Karl Urban returning as the grim, fascist, and yet still kind of lovable Judge Dredd.

After Dredd did pretty well on DVD and Blu-ray, there was some glimmer of hope that Dredd 2 might come to fruition. We’ve seen other glimmers from the producer of the film, from Karl Urban himself. But the reality is, a ...

5 Movie Reboots That Surprised Everyone

In today’s world of escalating production and marketing costs, the major Hollywood studios have rather infamously put a priority on revamping and milking established, proven brands  to turn a quick profit on their investment. Remakes, reboots, and adaptations have dominated the industry of late, for the simple fact that they do tend to be more successful commercially than original programming (though that may be the fault of the studios).

With a growing desire for executives to embrace new ideas, an announced reboot is usually met with as many rolled eyes as cheers. Considering a series is in need of a reboot after its forward momentum has been lost, the actual interest or value is openly questioned (criticism validated with every failed remake). Then there are the reboots that show the other side: confirming that there is room to produce exciting, new spins on old brands and reinvigorate the enthusiasm we ...

Drugs have formed the basis for some of the best movies of the past few decades. From dark and gritty dramas based on serious addiction, to the kind of lighthearted stoner comedy pioneered by Cheech and Chong, audiences love to watch people indulging in narcotics. We are even seeing hugely popular TV shows where drugs are the central issue: Weeds, Breaking Bad, even the new Netflix series Narcos all revolve around drug culture. We are fascinated by the underbelly of addiction and the extravagance of casual consumption in equal measure.
