Scarface al pacino 12 Best Movie Remakes of All Time

We live in the age of the movie franchise. As Hollywood studios become more and more adverse to taking risks on new, untried stories, they double down on the production of remakes, reboots, sequels and prequels. These new/old movies often fuel nostalgic discussions among the viewers about the good old days and cinematic masterpieces from those times.

However, not all remakes are created equal. Only some of them match the movies that inspire them and other times even surpass them.

We present you with the 12 Best Remakes of All Time.

Dredd Dredd Fans Launch Petition For TV Series Based On Movie

Fans of the 2012 science-fiction action film Dredd, which was written and produced by the director of last year’s critically acclaimed genre film Ex Machina, has garnered its very own base of loyal fans who would like to see more. Based in part on the comic strip originally published in the long-running 2000 AD comic book anthology series, the Judge Dredd character has seen his fair share of incarnations over the past thirty-odd years since his inception in the late 1970s, including the ill-received 1995 feature starring Sylvester Stallone. It was not until the aforementioned movie, directed by Pete Travis, was released that the character truly found his footing on the big screen.

For a while now, fans hoping to see more from Star Trek actor Karl ...

30 Movies that Deserve Sequels 30 Movies That Deserve A Sequel

In an age where all popular entertainment properties seem targeted as potential franchises via spinoffs, sequels, prequels, reboots, etc., not all films get a followup, even if they deserve one.

We’ve gathered quite a few examples of films that we at Screen Rant would love to see get another installment, many of them which were profitable and seem designed with sequels in mind. Many of these could one day have a sequel get the studio greenlight.

Keep in mind: This is not a ranking of what deserves a sequel the most since that’s impossible to quantify. We simply want to see them all, but we do also want to hear which you’re most interested in and if there are others not on this list that deserve sequels as well. ...

Following the release of the now modern cult-classic 2012 comic book movie adaptation that is Dredd, many fans of the original anthology comic book series 2000 AD, from which the eponymous character originated in the 1970s, have been awaiting a sequel. Written by Alex Garland (Ex Machina) with Karl Urban (who returns as Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in Star Trek Beyond later this year) in the starring role, Dredd suffered from a low box office turnout, making the prospect for Dredd 2 highly susceptible to chance. However, that hasn’t stopped executive producer Adi Shankar from lobbying in support of its production.

Despite the obvious enthusiasm for Dredd 2 from Shankar and fans of Dredd, Garland doesn’t think the sequel will ...

Best Movie Reboots Dredd Karl Urban on Dredd Return: Conversations Are Happening

Although far from a box office smash, the 2012 film Dredd has developed a strong cult following. A number of fans even filed a petition to create a TV series for cable or streaming services based on the recent film. And followers of the first movie aren’t alone. Dredd executive producer Adi Shankar and star Karl Urban (Leonard “Bones” McCoy from Star Trek Beyond) are also very interested in continuing the series in some way, shape, or form.

However, due to its financially disappointing performance in cinemas, writer Alex Garland (Ex Machina) feels a sequel isn’t likely to happen. Neither numbers nor pessimism have stopped Urban from continuing to push for a streaming Dredd follow up, though.

dredd sequel karl urban interview Karl Urban On Dredds Box Office Failure; Wants Worthy Sequel

Dredd, the most recent big-screen interpretation of the Judge Dredd comic book series, earned a very loyal cult following not long after it opened in theaters back in 2012. However, Dredd 2 is a film that is unlikely to ever be made due to the first installment’s weak box office turnout (it grossed $35 million worldwide on a $50 million budget in theaters).

This begs the question: does Dredd‘s strong critical reception, but weak commercial turnout make it a “success”, a “failure”, or something in between? For his part, the purveyor of justice and order himself, Dredd star Karl Urban has acknowledged that while the movie was a financial dud, that doesn’t mean he considers it a “failure”, by ...

The idea that reboots are inherently a bad idea was turned on its head back in 2012, when Dredd resurrected the cinematic career of the popular cult comic book series, Judge Dredd. At least, among the audiences the movie actually reached. Despite a dismal box office take for the Karl Urban (Star Trek Beyond) led film, its fans have been loud and vocal about their desires to see another go ‘round Mega City One and the further adventures of the titular anti-hero.

Fans haven’t been alone in the expression of their wants in this regard. Urban himself has been quite open about his willingness to return to the role, largely spearheading an unofficial campaign to find funding for a sequel to the film, ...

Drugs have formed the basis for some of the best movies of the past few decades. From dark and gritty dramas based on serious addiction, to the kind of lighthearted stoner comedy pioneered by Cheech and Chong, audiences love to watch people indulging in narcotics. We are even seeing hugely popular TV shows where drugs are the central issue: Weeds, Breaking Bad, even the new Netflix series Narcos all revolve around drug culture. We are fascinated by the underbelly of addiction and the extravagance of casual consumption in equal measure.

While there are plenty of real-life drugs to explore in film, there are just as many fictional ones that have been brought to life on the silver screen. Whether it’s because a fantasy world deserves a fantasy drug ...

Image Comics Zero 15 Indie Comics That Should Be Turned Into Netflix Shows

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand with no signs of slowing down. The DC Expanded Universe, meanwhile, is stuck playing catch-up (and seems to be struggling to do so). A few expensive misfires here and there (looking at you, Fantastic Four) haven’t put much of a wrinkle in what we all know to be true these days: comics are experiencing their biggest renaissance since, like, ever.

It’s not just the big name superheroes like Batman and Spider-Man continuing to cash checks in the zeitgeist, either. Over in the print world, creator-owned books are experiencing their own renaissance, with more original, independent series and miniseries on the shelves than ever before.

Best Movie Reboots Dredd 12 Movie Sequels Fans Are Still Waiting For

In recent years, it seems like every major movie release is either a sequel, prequel, remake or spin-off. Sometimes that can be a bad thing, sometimes it can be a good thing. It all depends on what the fans want; that’s no secret. Moviemaking is a business — people tend to forget that — and Hollywood studios benefit from listening to the fans. Take Deadpool for example, a movie which 20th Century Fox was hesitant about making, but when the test footage leaked in 2014, fan reception convinced the studio to move forward with the project. It’s now the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all-time.

With a plethora of superhero movies — by both Marvel and DC ...

dredd sequel karl urban interview 15 Superhero Movie Flops You Need To See

We live in the era of the comic book movie, where superheroes rule the box office. It seems that with each new entry from Marvel or DC (and the stray independent comic flick) the intense need for competitions sets in: will it have a record-breaking opening? Will it have legs? Can we make a franchise out of this? These pressures can often be so great that even if a film does reasonably well, it’s still considered a flop. It’s all based on expectations.

Its unfortunate that many moviegoers are just as obsessed with box office numbers as studio heads are. Just because a film makes a killing, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. And vice versa. Films like ...

Judge Dredd still

It’s the movement that just won’t die. While 2012’s Dredd failed to make an impact at the box office, the past few years have inspired a growing legion of fans demanding for a continuation of the Karl Urban (Star Trek: Beyond) led action extravaganza. Urban himself has, at times, led the charge, expressing not only interest in reprising his role as the post-apocalyptic keeper of the law, but also an outright adoration for the character and his story. Yet whenever there’s movement towards the positive for Dredd 2, conversations seem to fizzle out before anything can be solidified.

Earlier this year, Urban and producer Adi Shankar (A Walk Among Tombstones) confirmed that the most recent plans for a sequel faded away before they even began. This was a massive blow to the still-growing community of fans, ...

2012’s Dredd starred Star Trek: Beyond‘s Karl Urban as the merciless Judge Dredd, an attempt to reboot a dormant franchise which fizzled at the box office despite a decidedly positive response from fans and critics. In the years since, there have been rumblings that “conversations” for a sequel were happening, and while Urban and producer Adi Shankar want to see a Dredd 2 movie forward, Shankar stated as recently as this past June that a sequel is officially not in development.

Dredd‘s cult following has only grown since the movie became available on home video and via streaming outlets, with an enterprising fan even creating a video which imagined what the title credits could look like if ...

Cheesy Movie Quotes Judge Dredd

Long before the current era of Marvel and DC blockbusters dominating the box office, there was another time, a much darker time for comic book to film adaptations. That time was known as the 1990s, which played host to some of the most hated comic to screen efforts in history. Just to name a few, the ’90s saw the release of Steel (starring Shaquille O’Neal), a deeply flawed take on Spawn, the Joel Schumacher-directed camp-fest Batman & Robin, and the post-Brandon Lee sequel The Crow: City of Angels.

Even with all those other contenders in the running, perhaps the most trashed comic-based film from the decade is 1995’s Judge Dredd, starring Sylvester Stallone in the title role. Directed by Danny Cannon (Gotham), Sly’s take on Dredd was ravaged by critics and rejected by fans, with most diehards being disappointed in just ...

Dredd 2: Producer Says Sequel Could Be Animated

To say that Judge Dredd fans were disappointed by Danny Cannon’s Sylvester Stallone-fronted 1995 theatrical take on the character would be a massive understatement. The rest of the world wasn’t too high on the film either, with critics of the time widely trashing it, and box office earnings barely managing to recoup its $90 million budget. Thus, Judge Dredd dropped out of the Hollywood spotlight just as quickly as the cult favorite comic character had entered it, seemingly never to be seen again.

That was until 2012, when director Pete Travis and screenwriter Alex Garland teamed up to create Dredd, an attempt at finally giving the character the big screen glory fans thought ...

Karl Urban as Judge Dredd

In the time since the 2012 release of Dredd, few people have more vocally called for a sequel than Adi Shankar, who served as an executive producer on the film. Despite Dredd’s underwhelming box office haul, the pleasingly faithful take on the popular Judge Dredd character has earned itself a legion of followers via home video and streaming, and Shankar believes that those followers deserve a worthy big-screen follow-up. For his part, star Karl Urban has been right there with Shankar in pushing for a sequel to be made.

Just last week, Shankar once again stoked the potential Dredd sequel ...

Karl Urban as Dredd and Mega Man

One of the executive producers for 2012’s Dredd is branching out into video game adaptations, and wants Mega Man to be one of them. Dredd producer Adi Shankar has stayed busy in recent years, producing a number of unique shorts like The Punisher: Dirty Laundry, Venom: Truth In Journalism, and a dark reimagining of Power Rangers called Power/Rangers. Now, Shankar is now helming Netflix’s upcoming series based on the storied Castlevania video game franchise.

Shankar is clearly in an adventurous mood with his current wave of projects, and appears unafraid of the “video game curse” as he readies Castlevania for a 2017 release. But he doesn’t want to stop there with video game adaptations, and he revealed in a new interview that the classic Mega Man franchise could be next on his radar.

Speaking with WWG, Shankar discussed his recent run of films and series based on what ...

Judge Dredd Live-Action TV Show in the Works

A live-action television show starring Judge Dredd is currently in development. No one could have predicted that Dredd would have turned into the cult classic it’s become. Though the 2012 film was well-received by critics, it landed with a commercial thud at the box office, and that seemed like it would be the end for the live-action exploits of the comic book character. Between the failures of that movie, and the 1995 Sylvester Stallone flop Judge Dredd, it just didn’t seem to be in the stars.

Something magical happened after Dredd hit home video. People started watching it. More than that, they fell in love. Karl Urban (Star Trek Beyond) wowed fans ...

Judge Dredd

Since its release in 2012, fans of action film Dredd have been petitioning and campaigning online for a Dredd 2. After the movie underperformed at the box office, Dredd’s future outside of comic books had once again become uncertain. Yesterday, fans’ wishes were finally answered in an unexpected manner with the announcement that a TV series on the legendary street judge was in the works, titled Judge Dredd: Mega-City One.

While not quite a Dredd 2, the production is still an exciting prospect because it’s live-action Judge Dredd in a medium far more suited to the Judge’s world and misadventures. Not to knock Dredd by any means, ...
