New ‘Dredd’ Red-Band Clip: Ma-Ma Wants Judge Dredd Dead

The new red-band clip from Lionsgate’s Dredd sees scarred drug lord Madeline ‘Ma-Ma’ Madrigal (Lena Headey) declare open season on the pair of Judges skulking around her base of operations, the futuristic Peach Trees compound. It’s one of the rare quiet moments in Dredd, as anyone who caught the advanced screening at Comic-Con 2012 can testify.

Director Pete Travis keeps his foot pressed down on the gas pedal for most of the comic book film’s running time, resulting in lots of blazing shoot-outs between Judge Dredd (Karl Urban), Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) and Ma-Ma’s minions – most noteworthy of which are the 3D sequences imitating the effects of the “Slo-Mo” drug, allowing viewers to watch bloody mayhem “at a fraction of its normal speed.”

Headey as Ma-Ma doesn’t have much screen time once the fireworks get going in Dredd, but her appearances ...

Science-fiction merges with old-fashioned gun violence action in two of next month’s most hotly-anticipated releases: Dredd, a 3D reboot of the Judge Dredd franchise starring Karl Urban (Star Trek) as “the man with the helmet” – and Looper, Rian Johnson’s time-traveling mob thriller featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a young hit man who must execute his future self (played by Bruce Willis).

Today’s Dredd featurette focuses on the cutting-edge slow motion photography used to create the effect of “Slo-Mo” – a drug that (as screenwriter Alex Garland puts it) provides residents of crime-riddled Mega City One rare moments of bliss, as they experience reality at a fraction of its regular speed. “Slo-Mo Sequences” involve capturing staged blood-splatter slaughter at 4,000 frames per second (fps) – and transforming said brutality into something majestic and beautiful.

Dredd director Pete Travis has crafted the comic ...

‘Dredd 3D’ Clip: Karl Urban is the Law

Back in 1995, Sylvester Stallone donned the Judge Dredd helmet in order to bring the comic book warrior to life on the big screen. The character, as imagined by John Wagner, is a mix of Dirty Harry and RoboCop (Dredd actually inspired the latter) whose portrayal over the years has varied from a satirical riff on the fascist American cop tropes – to a dead-serious version of a futuristic officer who’s judge, jury, and executioner all rolled into one.

Stallone was a good physical match for the character, but his take on Dredd was closer to a sci-fi version of Rambo – not to mention, his costume (complete with golden codpiece) and line delivery (including, the now infamous “I am the law!”) resulted in a seemingly-unintentional lampoon version of the Judge. However, as illustrated in the new Dredd 3D clip, Karl ...

Dredd Writer Talks Sequels

Forget Sylvester Stallone, forget removing the helmet, and most importantly forget Rob Schneider. Lionsgate’s reboot of the Dredd property promises to be a faithful adaptation of the IPC Media comic, preserving all that fans love about it, and leaving everything else out.

While Dredd 3D doesn’t hit theaters for another couple of weeks, its writer Alex Garland is already looking towards the future. He’s not yet attached to scribe a Dredd sequel – and box office returns have yet to show audiences are interested – but Garland, nonetheless, has begun mapping out how he’d like to see future stories play out.

Speaking over on the 2000 AD Forums, Garland revealed that if a Dredd sequel were to happen it would throw classic Dredd icons like Fargo, Giant, the Angel Gang, and even Satanus into ...

Dredd Prologue Comic Ma Ma

When Lionsgate revealed their plans to reboot the Judge Dredd property, a plan that included sticking to the basic elements that made the comic book appealing, it created an enthusiasm from fans that many thought died when the Stallone film released. The casting of Karl Urban as Dredd, and the decision to never remove his iconic helmet all fell in line with what fans believed was needed to make a successful Dredd film.

Still, Dredd is a film adaptation and as such, it takes a few liberties in its storytelling, along with introducing characters not featured in the IPC Media series. Writer Alex Garland has already shown himself to be a huge fan of the Dredd property, but this first film needed to set up a world audiences could easily digest and characters that ...

Karl Urban Talks Dredd Sequels

When writer Alex Garland was asked about the possibility of a sequel to the upcoming reboot Dredd, his response included everything from talk of a trilogy, to what potential villains and heroes he would like to see in future Dredd films. Unfortunately, Alex Garland has quite a busy schedule coming up, and would most likely not be able to see his vision of the Dark Judges or Satanus come to fruition.

One member of the Dredd production that will hopefully be involved with the property in the future – if it proves successful – is Judge Dredd himself, Karl Urban. Urban has been a staple of the sci-fi and fantasy film genres for quite some time – starring in everything from Lord of the Rings to Star Trek – but it’s Dredd ...

New ‘Dredd’ Featurette Highlights The Judge’s Weapons & Equipment

The Dredd reboot may already be released overseas, but North American audiences still have a few days left to wait. In anticipation of the film’s opening, a new video has been released, which gives new insight into the arsenal and armor of Mega-City One’s Judges.

Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) will absolutely hog the spotlight as the grim embodiment of capital punishment, but there are sure to be plenty of science fiction and action fans who find just as much to love about the gear, the gun, and the motorcycle.

Rather than recreating exactly what was seen in the comic, in real life – as the 1995 Sylvester Stallone film adaptation did – the focus is on the greater believability. Where the previous film captured the look and feel of the character fairly well, the plot and forces at work soon escalated far beyond a ...

Judge Dredd Sequels Darker Politics

The wait is nearly over for the arrival of Dredd, and audiences overseas are already singing the film’s praises. While this reboot of IPC Media’s embodiment of law and order (not to mention capital punishment) is pitting Joseph Dredd against an apartment block full of deviants, the difference between good and evil in the source material isn’t always so clear-cut.

The film’s writer, Alex Garland (28 Days LaterSunshine), recently talked about the direction he’d like to see Dredd 2 (and subsequent sequels) go in the event that Dredd performs well in theaters. Apparently, a much closer look at Judge Dredd’s fascist side might be in store.

So far, the main selling points for Dredd have revolved around its action, violence, and the stunning high-speed visual effects used to…depict that violence. Even the ...

Karl Urban in 'Dredd 3D' (Review)

The 1995 Judge Dredd movie starring Sylvester Stallone remains a guilty pleasure adventure for plenty of action fans, not to mention a never ending Internet meme generator, but fell short of expectations for many comic book diehards. While Stallone may have been taking the role seriously, the campy one-liners and melodramatic character interaction undercut some of the most enjoyable qualities in the Judge Dredd character – namely a ruthless (and faceless) judge, jury, and instant executioner.

Rising above the standard skepticism surrounding franchise reboots, fans as well as action lovers remained cautiously optimistic about director Pete Travis and star Karl Urban’s Dredd 3D. Despite the optimism, early plot synopses and feature trailers drew strong comparisons to the premise of Gareth Evans’ Indonesian hit, The Raid: Redemptionabout a team of cops that ...

Karl Urban Judge Dredd Interview

The unflinchingly brutal and bloodthirsty comic book adaptation Dredd 3D opens in theaters this weekend, and reviews – including our own – have been mostly positive.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Karl Urban, who plays the titular character Judge Dredd, to talk about his history with and attachment to the source material, the possibilities for a sequel, the helmet – and yes, the violence in the film.

Screen Rant: You had been a fan of the comic when you were younger, yes?

Karl Urban: “Yeah, that’s right. I first started reading it when I was about seventeen and I was really attracted to the whole dystopian view of the whole sort of futuristic ‘Blade Runner’-esque city. I mean Mega-City One is a character in itself within the ...

Box Office Wrap Up - End of Watch

[UPDATE: The final tallies are in and End of Watch comes in at number 1 with $13.1 million, followed by House at the End of the Street with $12.28 million, and Trouble with the Curve with $12.16 million.]

It’s a close race for the top in this week’s box office with three films fighting tooth and nail to be number one.

As of right now (Sunday afternoon) Jake Gyllenhaal’s End of Watch and Jennifer Lawrence’s House at the End of the Street are sharing top honors with each pulling in $13 million in opening weekend grosses. For both films, regardless of where they end up in terms of ranking, a $13 million+ opening weekend is enough to surpass their respective budgets. David Ayer’s suburban cop drama End of Watch (read our review) was ...

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up Sept 30

Sony dominated this week’s box office with over $60 million dollars in opening weekend revenue, and a solid grasp on the top two spots.

In at number 1 is the Sony Animation Studios feature Hotel Transylvania (read our review), which brought in $43 million over the weekend. This makes it Sony’s best animated debut yet, as well as Adam Sandler’s second best opening weekend behind the remake of The Longest Yard. If that wasn’t enough reason for Sony to get excited, Hotel Transylvania‘s $43 million is also the best opening weekend for the month of September (when not adjusting for inflation). Needless to say we wouldn’t be surprised if Dracula and his cohorts took us back to Hotel Transylvania in a couple of years.

Coming in at a distant, but respectable, second ...

Dredd DVD Blu-ray Sales Sequel

The Last Stand is the 2013 poster child for a film that we loved but almost no went out to see; but in 2012, that dishonor went to Dredd 3D. The film – an attempt to relaunch the popular Judge Dredd comic book character in a retooled film franchise – hardly made a dent in the box office, though we (and many other geek types) gave it a favorable review.

With a total haul of $32 million (worldwide!) on a $50 million budget, it seemed that Dredd would definitely not get a sequel; but with the latest word on the film’s sales figures in the home video market, could there be new hope for another chapter?

A press release confirms that Dredd claimed the number one spot in DVD/Blu-ray sales, putting up ...

5 Biggest Misconceptions About 3D

3D Movie Questions Answered

“Should I see it in 2D or pay the extra cost for 3D?”

It’s a question that’s being asked with increased frequency these days, as audiences are becoming more savvy about the 3D moviegoing experience. We’ve all been burned (one time or another) by a subpar post-conversion, distracting pop-out gimmicks, or underwhelming return on a pricey 3D investment. For this reason, it’s easy to understand why so many film fans (and now, TV viewers) actively dismiss 3D as a shameful fad that handcuffs filmmakers – and subsequently, ruins most moviegoing experiences.

Yet, over the last five years we’ve also seen a number of captivating and memorable implementations of the format, including Avatar, Hugo, and Life of Pi, among others. Quality 3D wasn’t limited to sci-fi or adventure films either – as Final ...

‘Dredd’ Movie Sequel ‘Highly Unlikely’; Producer Promises ‘Dope’ Short Film Instead

Dredd Movie Sequel Short Film

For action fans, one of 2012′s biggest surprises was also one of its biggest box office bombs. After a campy and oft-maligned adaption of Judge Dredd in 1995, starring Sylvester Stallone, director Pete Travis rebooted the character in Dredd. Despite strong reviews from comic book fans and critics alike, Dredd only made $13 million at the domestic box office for a total haul (including international ticket sales) of $35 million – $15 million short of its production budget.

Word of mouth helped the film bring in extra sales when Dredd hit DVD and Blu-ray but, despite the success at retail, the film’s producer, Adi Shankar, is now saying that a sequel is unlikely. The official word from Shankar will be disappointing news for fans – especially those hoping to see star Karl Urban take-on the Dark Judges. However, ...
